About Us

Protest Chaplains NYC is made up of seminarians, clergy and other people of faith who feel called to support Occupy Wall Street and other people's movements for justice through pastoral care and support.  We represent many religious affiliations and spiritual paths. Prior to the eviction on 11/15 we had a consistent presence at Zuccotti Park.  Since then we have been present at Zuccotti and elsewhere: doing jail support, helping at churches that house occupiers, and participating in actions.  We try our best to run this group non-hierarchically and through consensus in the spirit of the Occupy movements.  All who feel called to our mission are welcome to join.

Our primary tasks are listening, prayer and presence.  We listen non-judgmentally and empathetically.  We do not try to fix problems, just to understand what people are going through.  We offer prayer and other forms of spiritual support without any intention of changing the spiritual identities and commitment of those we encounter.  We are present in non-violent and loving ways, both as people of faith and as fellow occupiers.

As Occupy Wall Street negotiates the loss of our living space, we are negotiating our roles as chaplains and we remain committed to supporting this movement!
